An Ode to Barolo

Breaking Bread

Something that we noticed while in Worcester, is that the wine here is much cheaper than at home.  I do realize that my Cask Ale addiction would normally diminish my wine consumption, but they just would not give us our own cask of ale for Diglis Cottage.  Our dear friend Brian found a wonderful bottle of Barolo at the local Tesco.  They did try to sell him the newer, fresher Barolo, but he was having none of it.  What to do with a nice Barolo???  Plan a meal around it of course!  Barolo is a special wine, that needs to age, to come to its maturity, this is much like friendships. So here we are in our beautiful but temporary home, with friends old and new, to share in some Barolo and more importantly friendship, camaraderie and family.

We finally had the chance to meet someone who Steph holds in high esteem, and this is someone we just had to meet.  So this afternoon at Diglis Cottage in Worcester UK, we have our trio, our housemates Chris and Rosemary, Brian and our guest of honour Arthur. We left the  table out front of the cottage, so we will have a lovely view of the lock and Cathedral while we experience friendship, food and Barolo

For our starter, we had charcoal grilled Blinis with Crème Fraiche and Smoked Salmon and Dill.

Our main featured the wonderful Barolo, in a Barolo Risotto, served                       with more Barolo!!

We accompanied this with a leg of lamb, marinated with “Barolo”, Dijon and Rosemary, and roasted over charcoal.

For sides, we had Caprese Salad, French Green Beans with Toasted Almonds, Grilled Asparagus, Grissini and Stuffed Mushrooms.

We have had a wonderful time at Diglis Lock Cottage.  A time of food, companionship, connection. ….  and Barolo.   After dinner, we should have been rushing off to our show, but we were having such a wonderful walk/chat with Arthur, we actually got into the Cathedral, just as the pre-concert prayer was starting (to many disapproving looks)…..  and it turns out it was worth it.  We may have to head back to real life soon, but we take with us memories.  Memories of the friends we arrived with. Memories of the friends we feel like we have known for years.  And memories of new friends. This helps to steel us for a return to reality, knowing that there is support for us there.  We just have to look…..

  1. What I love about this blog entry is the number of times the word “Barolo” appears! It was a special meal indeed, and beautifully prepared. Thank you, Shawn and Dave!
    P. S. Barolo!
