Breaking Bread

We missed a few Mondays while Steph was away at Podium. Luckily, we  have a set of her house keys and made ourselves  at home and started prepping since Steph wasn’t going to be home until 7PM.  She was greeted by Enzo (our dog) whilst coming up the driveway.  A glass of wine was quickly placed in her hand and we sat down to get caught up.  The weather was ideal so we ate al fresco on the deck. We started with a beautiful Tomato Egg Drop soup.

This is a lovely and fragrant soup with notes of ginger, kaffir limes leaves, Thai chile,  and cilantro.  A nice rich soup, with a bit of a zing at the end. Check out the lovely dappled sunlight in the pictures.

For our main, we wanted something that would hold well, since we were not sure on the timing of Steph’s arrival. We served a Pad Thai noodle salad, with chicken satays.

We paired this with another find from Prince Edward County, a Keint-He 2013 Voyageur Chardonnay, from Steph’s visit to the winery.  The salad was nice and fresh tasting, with chicken, shrimps and tofu that was marinated and grilled over charcoal. Combined with fresh herbs, nut and a peanut dressing, it was the perfect dish for early summer.

Between courses, we checked on Steph’s garden and caught up on her adventures at Podium. We then lingered over Strawberry and red wine sorbet and golden pound cake.

The sorbet combines fresh Ontario strawberries and red wine (Chianti classico), which features the freshness of the fresh Ontario strawberries, while giving a more intense flavor and colour. Steph opened a bottle of Huff Estates 2014 First Frost Vidal. This is a lighter, late harvest dessert wine, so as not to overpower the light dessert. Another nod to Prince Edward County.  It’s so nice to be able to dine outside and just enjoy food and camaraderie.
